Ethiopian has come a long way since commencing operations in
1946 with a weekly service between Addis Ababa and Cairo. For
many years the company pursued a policy of network expansion,
aimed at "Bringing Africa Together." The airline recognised that a
successful future depended on first developing a far-reaching pan-African route network. With this strategy largely fulfilled, the
airline's focus has, for some time now, been shifting. New
destinations and increased numbers of flights to Europe, the USA,
Asia and the Middle East have been launched, as the airline
continues bringing the world closer to Africa.

This year, Ethiopian implemented a code-sharing agreement with Brussels Airlines to further strengthen the flight network between Addis Ababa and Brussels. Ethiopian operates daily flights to and from Brussels with Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
This came hard on the heels of a code-sharing agreement
between Ethiopian and Lufthansa for the Addis Ababa – Frankfurt
route and with Air One on the Addis Ababa - Rome route. This
arrangement enables our passengers to take advantage of
Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub which offers convenient onward
connections to many parts of Europe and the rest of the world and
access to Air One’s route network through out Italy.
All of these code-sharing agreements also offer passengers from
Europe efficient connections to Ethiopian’s extensive route
network in Africa and the Middle East, via our modern Addis
Ababa hub.
A few years back Ethiopian had also entered into a code sharing
agreement with South African Airways to enhance traffic on the
Addis Ababa – Johannesburg route, while last year we entered
into a bilateral commercial agreement with TAAG Angola Airlines
that will mutually benefit the passengers of the two airlines.
All of these initiatives are designed to solidify our extensive route
network and provide convenient connections and efficient service
to our customers even better than anytime before.
Another priority this year is to strengthen Ethiopian’s cargo
business which has a great potential for significant further growth.
The results of our endeavour in this regard will have direct effect
over the export of agricultural products from Ethiopia and
neighbouring African countries. This emerging export market will
also directly benefit the business community.
For our domestic passengers, wherever facilities permit, jet
services are being introduced on selected domestic routes, with
‘Cloud Nine’ levels of comfort and service.
A major milestone for our Airline will be the introduction of the
remarkable Boeing 787 Dreamliner next year. We are a launch
carrier for the Dreamliner, and for the first two to three years,
Ethiopian will be the only Airline to fly the aircraft in Africa and the
Middle East. We will also be flying the 787 Dreamliner long before
anyone in Europe – an achievement that gives us great pride.
On behalf of the entire Ethiopian team, I thank you for choosing to
fly with us.
