Jul 2 - 6Ethiopian and BCC Sign Deal for MD-11 Freighter Aircraft

The MD-11, which at the moment is in a passenger configuration, will soon be converted to freighter with a capacity of 88 tons of cargo. The aircraft will be delivered to Ethiopian in January 2009. Ethiopian is also negotiating for a second converted MD-11 freighter aircraft on lease basis for the delivery at the end of 2009. Ethiopian now owns two 757 freighter aircraft.

Dec 29 - Ethiopian Leases two DC-10-30F Freighter Aircraft

Ethiopian leases-in two DC-10-30F freighter aircraft to bolster its cargo capacity to support the ever increasing export market of the country. The lease agreement for the two freighter aircraft was signed in first week of December, 2006 between Ethiopian Airlines and World Airways Inc; based in US. Both cargo aircraft will start operation on January 01, 2007.

The Super Jumbo aircraft Airbus A380 landed at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on Monday October 16, 2006 making the Addis Ababa International Airport the first African Airport visited in the framework of its flight test program. The Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is chosen for its altitude of 7,500 feet above sea level.

Oct 01 - ET Takes Delivery of the Converted B757-200 FA

As the conversion process of the previous passenger aircraft B757-200 to a freighter aircraft was completed on September 30, 2006 the aircraft is flying back home. In order to meet the demand of the increasing Ethiopia’s exports, Ethiopian Airlines will also lease in MD-11 Freighter with 85 tonnes capacity from January through May 2007. Both MD-11 and the converted B757 aircraft will operate on the European routes to carry the horticultural export.

In its endeavour to match the increasing number of passengers, Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with Atlasjet Airlines based in Turkey to lease B757-200 aircraft. The lease agreement signed on August 25, 2006 will be for six months effective September 13, 2006. The lease is on ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) basis although cabin service will be provided by Ethiopian Airlines cabin crew.

Jul 28 - Ethiopian Airlines and GE Complete Agreement

Ethiopian Airlines and General Electric (GE) have completed purchase agreement for GEnx engines to power the 10 B787 Dreamliner aircraft Ethiopian purchased from Boeing. The total value of the engines is 330 million US dollars at list prices. The order is for 20 engines to power the 10 aircraft and 3 spare engines. CEO of Ethiopian, Mr. Girma Wake and the regional manager of GE, George D. Duncanson, signed the purchase agreement at Ethiopian head office on July 26, 2006.

Jun 29 - Ethiopian Airlines to sponsor Great Ethiopian Run

Ethiopian Airlines this week announced that it will be the official airline sponsor for the 2006 TOYOTA Great Ethiopian Run which will take place in Addis Ababa on Sunday 26th November 2006. The sponsorship deal was struck following a meeting between Great Ethiopian Run Director, Haile Gebrselassie and Ethiopian Chief Executive Officer, Girma Awake.

Last year Ethiopian ordered 10 Boeing B787 Dreamliners. The first B787 is slotted for delivery in November 2008. To meet capacity demands in the interim period, Ethiopian Airlines has reached an agreement with WORLD AIRWAYS to lease an MD-11 aircraft.


Jun 15 - Ethiopian Leases an Airbus A330-200

Last year Ethiopian ordered 10 Boeing B787 Dreamliners. The first B787 is slotted for delivery in November 2008. To meet capacity demands in the interim period, Ethiopian Airlines has reached an agreement with Societe de Transport Aerien Regional S.A. to lease an Airbus A330-200. The aircraft will enter service effective June 18, 2006.

A Brand New B737-700 for Ethiopian

On June 23, 2005, Ethiopian Airlines took delivery of a brand new B767-300ER aircraft from Boeing. The aircraft arrived Addis Ababa Bole International Airport the following evening at 07:15 am. Today Tuesday, June 14, 2005, Ethiopian Airlines will graduate 51 cabin crew. The cabin crews were selected as trainees, out of 270 interested applicants, who passed through preliminary screening. The selection criteria are based on the needs and challenges of the profession.

The United States Department of State Office of the Spokesman announced the signing of an Open Skies air transport agreement with Ethiopia. U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Maria Cino and Ethiopian State Minister of Infrastructure Haile Asegide signed the agreement today, May 17, 2005 in Washington, D.C.


ET and Boeing Complete 787 Agreement

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) and the Boeing Co. completed an order agreement for five Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets and purchase rights for five additional 787s. The agreement is based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two companies earlier this year.

Recognition for Long Service

Ethiopia and China Fly in Partnership

Hong Kong Seminar

Representatives of leading travel agencies in Abidjan, Bujumbura, Kigali, Lome, Nairobi, Lagos and Addis Ababa met for a seminar in Hong Kong on January 23, 2002. Chaired by Ethiopian Executive Officer Marketing, Ato Mekonnen Abebe, the seminar was held to orient agents on Ethiopian’s twice weekly service to Hong Kong, which began on January 2, 2002.

Helping Students on Their Way

In its commitment to social development in Ethiopia, Ethiopian has joined United World College, and International NGO run by Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa and Queen Noor of Jordan. The airline will provide free tickets to winners of scholarships offered by the college.


Best Travel Agents Awarded

Award Ceremonies were held for top-selling travel agents at Dar es Salaam, Kampala, and Nairobi on 16, 18, and 20 September 2002. The awards in Dar es Salaam were presented by the Chief Executive Officer, Ato Bisrat Nigatu, and those in Nairobi and Kampala were presented by Ato Daniel Hailu, Division Manager Planning and Route Management.


Art Reflects Life in Addis Ababa

Ethiopian sponsored a three-day art activity entitled ´Giziawi´ at Maskel Square, Addis Abab, between 6 and 8 November 2002. ´Giziawi´ means ´temporary´ in Amharic, and this was the theme captured by the interesting display. Renowned artists painted on canvases, giving spectators the rare opportunity of watching artists at work.
